It’s November and the chances are that you may have noticed men growing their mustaches for Movember!
For years, as a part of the Movember movement, men across the globe have been growing their mustaches in November to raise funds for a charity.
Yes, you heard it right! Growing mustaches are helping a non-profit organization raise funds for a noble cause.
But how exactly are mustaches related to a non-profit organization? Let’s have a look:
What Is Movember?
Before I address how growing a mustache helps charity, let’s first try to understand what exactly is Movember?
Movember is a global charity that is committed to changing the face of men’s mental health, prostate cancer & testicular cancer. Each year the foundation raises millions of dollars that are solely used for support programs and research studies that enable men to live a longer and healthier life.
Even though the nonprofit organization has various year-round activities, they are most popularly known for the annual Movember campaign conducted in November.
The annual Movember campaign is a fun activity that encourages men to grow their mustache, stay physically active, or host a fundraiser event for charity. The idea behind this innovative strategy is to both spread awareness as well as raise funds for a noble cause.
How Did Movember Begin?
Movember was started in 2003 by Travis Garone and Luke Slattery. In 2003, they decided to spread awareness about the state of men’s health by bringing back the fashion of growing a mustache.
Travis & Luke started the cause after they got inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer. They decided to start a campaign that spreads awareness of the state of men’s health including prostate and testicular cancer.
Why Do People Participate In Movember?
People participate in Movember to have fun and to spread some awareness. Many take this month-long commitment seriously to spark some conversation about the state of men’s health and the dire issues that affect men in this world.
How You Can Participate
There are different ways to participate in Movember. Movember is not restricted to people growing their mustaches alone. Here are three different ways to participate in the campaign:
1. Grow A Mustache:
Any man across the globe can participate in this campaign by choosing to grow their mustache in November. All they need to do is grow a mustache and simply share information about the cause wherever they can.
2. Take The Move Challenge:
Participating in the Movember move challenge is another way people can contribute to the campaign.
The move challenge motivates participants to run or walk 60 kilometers over November in recognition of the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour across the world.
3. Host A Fundraiser:
If you don’t want to grow a mustache or participate in the move challenge you can still contribute by hosting a fundraiser. Invite your friends & colleagues, host a party virtually or in person, have fun & encourage them to donate to a good cause.
The next time you see someone participating in the Movember annual movement, remember the message behind the mustache. Do your bit by spreading awareness about suicide prevention, mental health issues, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
